My father, is an afficiando of newspapers. When we go on short holidays, he delights in reading the newspapers left under the hotel door. When I travel, I try to bring back newspapers for him. He simply likes to read newspapers. And I kind of understand, because newspapers are different in each part of the world.

Do any of you own the Amazon Kindle?

I’m thinking that this is the perfect device to buy for an elderly person to ensure they keep their brains active by reading everyday.

160,000 books plus newspapers, magazines, and blogs available for download, and all delivered wirelessly to the Kindle.

If any of you own one, please tell me if it’s a good buy or not? You can leave a comment or email me.

hi caleb – we have a kindle social network at booksummit.com – you can talk to Kindle owners and get their opinion and get a good idea of what the kindle is like.

My advisor bought one. The screen resolution (effective print quality) is very nice, much better than a typical LCD screen. However you have to deal with DRM issues on it. Gotta buy many of those books!

I think it’s a nice idea, but hardly a print medium killer at this point.

IIRC the wireless part is only works in US. It doesn’t connect to your regular Wifi.

The EVDO network that delivers news on the go is only available in the US. Technically the books etc. are also available in the US only. You can however use amazon credits to buy books (akin to the way some of us buy music for iTunes store by buying iTunes US gift cards). The bought books can then be loaded to the device over USB.
Still you won’t get the news. If you read a lot of books then it is a good purchase otherwise its not worth it.

if you really want to get it then wait for a couple of months, there is a newer version coming out. I am using another ebook reader from Bookeen. The e-ink screen is great.
