Cowboy Caleb Chats With Some Kuching Geologists

I’ve been wanting to write about my trip to Kuching, the capital of Sarawak but I keep delaying it because all the photos are back home and I’m currently in China.

But there is one curious incident I would like to to share with you.

One night after a ridiculously large seafood dinner (lobsters, prawns etc for only Rm150!!!), all the women went for a massage at some spa while I went off with the boys to a local pub. Now Kuching is very close to the off-shore petroleum rigs. It was at the pub that I was introduced to 2 geologists who worked for SHELL. They had just finished a 1 month stint on the rig and had just arrived back on the mainland.

Some questions I asked these 2 geologists, and their shocking answers:

Will Malaysia running out of oil soon?
Not likely. In fact, we just found another 3 wells last week. And we weren’t even trying very hard. The oil here is going to last a very long time.
Note: they get a couple of thousand dollars as a bonus each time they strike oil.

So why are Malaysians paying so much for oil?
Malaysian oil is of pretty high quality. The F87king government would rather sell it and pocket the proceeds and leave the common people to suffer.

So how liddat?
Don’t know about you, but once we make our money here, we’re migrating.

So now you know why Malaysian PM Badawi can reduce the price of petrol at will, and his deputy PM Najib can threaten us to cancel future reductions.

Malaysia BOLEH!!!

dude, subsidies distort the market which create inefficient uses of resources.

the subsidies of oil in malaysia has caused it much loss for the past few years.

Oil rigs are hundred of miles away from Kuching.

“….local pub. Now Kuching is very close to the off-shore petroleum rigs. It was…”

Kenny Sia, actually the closest rig or platform to Kuching will be at Belingian offshore. Look at the context “very close”, now define very close?

i think ppl are confused between running out of oil & becoming net importer of oil….the answer is yes, in 20-30 years & yes, in 5-10 years depending on new discoveries & consumption rates.

btw, operations geologist won’t know much about the size of reserves, they only know if there’s oil here or there in where they are drilling but not how much. Even if there’s a new discovery, optimal development/production drilling to ensure optimum production is not exactly easy to do. Convincing the top guys up there who are not up to date with the latest LWD tools with DTB technology aren’t exactly that easy.

also, if you have higher quality of oil, where ppl are willing to buy it at a premium, and you can buy cheaper oil from saudi & refine it for less, why would you use your own oil?

OK, UMNO Cybertrooper. Now tell us where the fuck the profits from selling these higher quality oil goes to?

And curious how 3 oil “specialists” suddenly pop into this blog, and become very defensive. CB, are their IPs the same?

This is not defending anybody, this is just general information for everyone.

I work in part of this field so I know how thing work around. What they do with the profit I really dunno & have no idea. I’m not one of the politcian who got a piece of the cake, if I am…I wont be wasting time chating on this here…

Just for example aw, if you’re boss produce rolex & u sell rolex for him. Do you wear one yourself when people wants to buy your rolex with high price? Or you keep the rolex & sell it cheap to your friends & family? And do you know what does the CEO of Rolex do with the profit?

Just common sense…

Besides, that is how the system work…just so you know…
