Things We Knew Only Knew Today
I had dinner with Jaywalk and his dad tonight, at this joint called “Banana Leaf Curry House” which just opened outside his house in China. We had all assumed it was an South Indian restaurant but it turned out to be a Thai restaurant much to our chagrin.
At some point, Jaywalk’s dad decides that he would like to have some bread to dip into the curry just like he used to do in Singapore.
Jaywalk’s Dad: I want some sliced French bread rolls
Manager: Ok
Jaywalk’s Dad: What’s this then?
Manager: This is French bread
Jaywalk’s Dad: No, this is French toast
Manager: It taste really good with curry
Jaywalk’s Dad: Do you know what French bread rolls are?
Manager: errr…. No
Jaywalk’s Dad: Then why didn’t you say so in the first place?

After dinner, we went over to Jaywalk’s cousin’s place because we were stuffed with curry and pineapple rice. His cousin introduced me to the wonderful world of Taiwanese Pili Puppets.
In Taiwan, Pili puppets are wildly popular with kids, teenagers and middle-aged men! The puppets are huge and are used to tell Wuxia stories. There are spectacular choreography and CGI effects. Pili puppets are so popular that there is a dedicated television channel in Taiwan for the shows.
Amazing. I’m definitely going to be checking out Pili puppets in greater detail in the near future.
