The Straits Times Asks Cowboy Caleb If Blogging Is Harmful To Health

The Straits Times sent me a mail asking if Blogging was harmful to one’s health. Just in case, I am publishing their questions and my replies online.

Update: They asked Kennysia the same question!

Hi Cowboy Caleb,

I’m Mun San from ST Life!. Sorry to bother, but I’m doing a story on how blogging affects the lives and health of local bloggers. This is a follow-up to a recent story on how two tech bloggers in the States died suddenly (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/06/technology/06sweat.html?ref=us). Wonder if you could help me with the story? I’m sending my questions first, hope you don’t mind.

- How many posts do you write a month?
- What is the most number of posts you’ve ever written in a day?
- What is the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of blogging?
- Do you find yourself having the urge to blog at the strangest places and times? (I notice that you post regularly on the go, in airport louges, from restaurants etc)
- How often do you check your blog to see if there are new comments?
- It is reported that many bloggers suffer from weight loss/gain, insomnia etc. Has your health been affected in similar ways?
- Do you feel the stress to beat fellow bloggers in coming up with the wittiest post, the fastest response to a piece of news etc?
- Do you believe that blogging can kill? Why?
- Has your wife complained about your blogging habits?
- May I know your real name please?

It’d be great if you could reply by tomorrow. Thanks very much!

Hi,

- How many posts do you write a month?
Mar 08 - 225 posts
Feb 08 - 165 posts
Jan 08 - 180 posts

Take note that I tend to post ‘asides’ type of posting which is basically a link to interesting stuff on the web.

- What is the most number of posts you’ve ever written in a day?
Probably around 20 posts.

- What is the craziest thing you’ve done in the name of blogging?
Staying up all night in my Pattaya hotel room to bring live coverage of the military coup that brought Thaksin down. Now that I think about it, they could have traced me and thrown me into jail.

- Do you find yourself having the urge to blog at the strangest places and times? (I notice that you post regularly on the go, in airport louges, from restaurants etc)
Yes. I tend to moblog while I’m on the go. This is pretty easy since I use a Blackberry. Just snap, write a few words and send it off to my blog.

- How often do you check your blog to see if there are new comments?
Probably once a day, before I begin writing new posts.

- It is reported that many bloggers suffer from weight loss/gain, insomnia etc. Has your health been affected in similar ways?
My health suffers from massive consumption of alcohol during Cowboy Bar (a popular online forum for grown-up local bloggers) parties and events. But apart from that, I don’t think my blog affects my health in any way.

- Do you feel the stress to beat fellow bloggers in coming up with the wittiest post, the fastest response to a piece of news etc?
Not in the least. Competitions are unhealthy, especially since there is no prize in this case. My blog traffic is already stressing my server currently. I can barely cope.

- Do you believe that blogging can kill? Why?
I think any hobby/job brought to the level of mania is unhealthy, not just blogging. In the grand scheme of things, blogging is more dangerous than catwalk-modeling (all that dieting!) but less lethal than in-line skating.

- Has your wife complained about your blogging habits?
My wife thinks the Intarwebs is one big online shopping mall.

- May I know your real name please?
Cowboy Caleb

regards,
C. Caleb

Blogging will not kill.

Answering those questions maybe will.
On top of that, the deadline “by tomorrow” confirm can kill who ever has to reply that email.
