Firefighting Is An Exhausting Task

I’m seriously thinking about throwing the towel into the ring and calling it quits on China.

Last night, I sat numb in my hotel room drinking the little bottles of whiskey from the minibar thinking about the mess I’m in.

All alone in China. Zero support from the top, who probably couldn’t even help me if they wanted to because they hold little sway in this part of the world. That never stopped them from making unreasonable demands on me though.

My team morale is down as well. Their wages have not kept up with the cost of living here, and my hands are tied by company policy. They get their annual increment in the next few days, and I hope that all those mountain-climbing weekends, birthday celebrations, little things like snacks in the office and my caring attitude - will be enough to make them stay on. I expect a quarter of them to resign though.

For every fire I put out, another 2 fires break out else where.

Nobody to talk to. Nobody to confide in. I’m weary, just so weary.

Get ready for a rough ride. After being in Spitland for 8 years, I can tell you that these folks have no loyalty to you.

All the BBQ, birthday cakes are just you being taken as a free lunch.

When you mess with the number of grains of rice in their bowl, they will bite the hand that feeds.

Well, at least this is my case here. Hopefully it’s different for you.

Good luck.

V: Pardon my intrusion but that has gotta be one of the dumbest suggestion ever. Sorry.

The reason why DG is because it’s way cheaper than GZ or SZ. Then along come the new employment contract law that satisfy neither employer nor employee.

Employer angry at sudden extra cost. Employee angry because raise doesn’t translate to more money in hand (cannot keep up with inflation, and soc insurance/cpf/epf things only benefits you when you’re already in da shit).

“Remember days when we force you sleepless/OT/bang onto the (covered-up)problem until it’s fixed? Remember those days when we spent hours helping your English homework? Remember the time spent explaining to you how to do things the correct/logical/engineering/the-rest-of-the-world way and not the C**** way?

Remember that when you pad your resume biatch! Remember that your college didn’t teach all this nor prepare you for the world competition and we did. Remember all those lessons at your next better-paying job and try not to give your new boss ulcers”

There… I almost feel as altruistic as Bill Gates already ….whistling..

Grant > I think you summarized it pretty well. So what’s next? Move the factories to outer mongolia? Shipping is going to cost a pretty penny….

hehehe to the next communist country - Vietnam!
I hope we don’t run out of communist country with a port too soon

like you said, the moving inland idea wouldn’t work too well if it’s nowhere near a port

they’ll need to increase productivity and efficiency by using modern tools (not only hardware but also soft tools) instead of relying on brute bodycount only (always reminds me the story about how much cheaper it is to place SMT components by many hands than by machine)

I’m pretty sure if we look (or dare to look. Gives you nightmare at times), we can always find somewhere to improve efficiency, to get less people but who can do more and do it right and to use their common sense.

Most of the time we’re actually stuck with Unbelievably Retarded Absurdly Stupid Situation and spend donkey years trying to fight that fire. The photo you use is strangely appropriate.
(”have you followed up on the lead time? can they deliver it? huh, can they even manufacture required quantity with 2 puny machines? NO! DRIVER LOST HIS HANDPHONE IS NOT A VALID EXCUSE FOR NO MATERIAL!”)

One person should be able to do the work for 2. Let one go, pay the remaining good employee 1.5x. Give him/her 0.10 increment annually until the 5th year. OK here’s where I run out of idea and buy motivational posters….

I think it’ll come to a tipping point where investing in canggih tech is cheaper than human. And at that time, wage and purchasing power probably has also risen to a point where it’s worth sticking around China for the domestic market

Don’t fucking get there. The bosses throw you to the wolves, just fuck it up and push them to the wolves instead, let them deal with that shit.
