Why The Malaysian Speed Camera Project Will Never Work

1,500 speed cameras to watch M’sian roads. By early next year, speed trap cameras will be placed at the accident-prone areas throughout Malaysia, and will be operational round-the-clock.

Police plan year-round surveillance and $130 on-the-spot fine

If you haven’t already read about it, Malaysia plans to install 1,500 speed cameras to watch the roads. This is supposed to help them catch errant drivers and reduce the total number of accidents.

This Cowboy predicts an utter and massive failure, not to mention a waste of taxpayer money.

Allow me to explain.

The traffic police conduct regular roadblocks whenever they are broke. At these roadblocks, they extort money in the form of bribes from helpless Malaysians and Singaporeans. It doesn’t really matter if you were speeding, of if you were not because you’ll have to cough up RM50 anyway.

With these cameras in place, the traffic police will now have no excuses to conduct their roadblocks. I predict that the cameras will breakdown from vandalism and lack of maintenance with nobody bothering to repair them.

Malaysia boleh!

Well actually I read that they are going to introduce a mechanism that allows a policeman to access the system (if they do it within 5 minutes) and delete the offending video clips. This would benefit them so that they don’t need to set up roadblocks and patrol but still be able to accept bribes from motorists who were caught speeding.

So it helps them to more efficiently accept bribes??

Gosh.

There is an interesting post about the injustice of speed cameras in the UK on this blogsite today http://bentsocietyblog.blogspot.com/ ..and another was posted earlier on Friday. These cameras do raise revenue but they also elienate huge swathes of others who see themselves as not of a criminal dispostion and, therfore, undeserving of police attention , fines and driving bans.

If Malaysians complain as much as Singaporeans it may work.

You guys stop worrying,as a malaysian I can tell you these cameras will not last.Policemen know that their bosses are short of cash,so by buying and installing these cameras, they will pocket some money ( this is our standard procedure). After the transaction is completed, these cameras will take turn to either out of order or stolen.

Road blocks will come back since no policeman can survive without road block. Some even work OT without salary !
