A Cowboy Fairy Tale

This is a story that my brother-in-law told me over dinner today. I’ve modified it slightly with more whimsical names

Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Tuesdays, there lived a prosperous and happy people. They never lacked for anything because the land was abundant in produce and their cup doth overfloweth with honey. And so it came to pass that they made a law decreeing that only the top side of food could be consumed. The bottom side of food could not for any reason be eaten on the pain of death.

Several leagues away, there lived a poor people in the barren kingdom of Mondays. The earth was barren and the skies refused to rain. So the people were constantly in hunger. One of their number, a boy named Thyme decided to run away and look for greener pastures. After several days of travelling, he stumbled on the kingdom of Tuesdays and was marveled at how well-fed all the people seemed to be.

The goodfolk of Tuesdays saw how haggard and starved the boy Thyme looked and took it upon themselves to feed him. So they prepared a great feast for him. Thyme loved fish, for there were barely any to be had in the kingdom of Mondays. But alas for Thyme, he did not know of the law of Tuesdays. Upon eating one side of the poached fish he had been served on a steaming plate, he turned it over to eat the other side of the fish!

How the people of Tuesdays wept and howled when they had saw what Thyme had done because now he surely had doomed himself. The King of Tuesdays came down to see the wretched boy and told him that he could have one final wish for whatever he wanted - except for his life to be spared.

So Thyme thought long and hard and finally he said “I want all those who saw me turn the fish over, to have their eyes scooped out with this spoon that I hold in my hand!!!”. And then he cried out loud to all the goodfolk of Tuesdays“Let those who have seen me turn the fish, step forward now!”

Nobody stepped forward and therefore nobody saw Thyme turn the fish over. So no crime had been committed.

Thyme then returned to the kingdom of Mondays shortly thereafter.
