Restaurant Review: Nasi Ayam Periuk Besar (Big Pot ‘O’ Chicken Rice)

Today’s restaurant review brings us to the unlikely destination of the Kulim district in the state of Kedah, Northern Malaysia. Located just above Penang, it’s terribly remote. You may ask wtf I am doing here - well I have to travel here from time to time for work because there’s an industrial park here (here’s where your Intel Chips, Dell laptops etc originate from).

Say hello to Nasi Ayam Periuk Besar which translates into Big Pot ‘O’ Chicken Rice.
This restaurant is so popular that is has gone down the franchising route while maintaining stalls on the fringes of palm oil plantations. The location is so remote, so unlikely - you’ll require a local to drive you there! It’s always packed so if you’re not there early you won’t get a seat.
All they sell in Chicken Rice served from a huge pot. The chicken comes in several varieties.

Roast Chicken Rice - Spicy roasted chicken rice served with normal white chicken rice. The soup goes really well with the rice.

“Dot My” Chicken rice - Orange-ish chicken rice served with roasted chicken marinated in spices. Served with soup and a delicious prune juice. This is comes with my personal recommendation.

Honey Chicken Rice - A cross between beriani and chicken rice served with delicious honey roasted chicken.

Conclusion:
5 out of 5 stars - The chicken rice is good enough to warrant a visit if you’re in Northern Malaysia. There’s nothing else like it to be found elsewhere.
