Chinese Driver From Hell
I usually engage a private driver to ferry me about town when I am in China. He’s at my beck and call day and night, which suits my purposes. This is a common practice in China, where foreigners usually hire the services of a private driver instead of a taxi because they have clean comfortable cars and provide value-added services like serving as a concierge, deliveryman and other shite.
Yesterday it all went wrong.
There was a team dinner with (yet another) new Director buy my usual driver was busy elsewhere, so he asked Wild Bill (his cousin) to pick me up from my office in the evening. This is what happened.
5.55pm: Wild Bill drives his MPV and arrives at the gates of my office
5.56pm: Security asks him to move his MPV to the side while they verify his entry with me
5.58pm: A heated argument breaks out between Wild Bill and a security guard
6.00pm: They come to blows
6.01pm: Wild Bill goes to his MPV to grab a weapon saying he’s going to kill the guard
6.05pm: 2 police cars arrive after being alerted by the guards
6.06pm: The security manager calls me and asks me to come down
6.10pm: Chaos breaks out at the gates of the office as the police tries to calm Wild Bill down
To make a long story short, when I arrived at the scene, I told Wild Bill to shut the f87k up and apologize to the security guard, following which the police were satisfied and we were allowed to leave. But the damage was done.
I had lost a lot of face thanks to this stupid driver that I had hired. And we were half an hour late for our dinner appointment too.
