Childish Gamers?

My blog is something I normally do not let people know about. I’d rather keep my blogging restricted to the realm of imaginary friends and $ponsors. The reason is simple. If too many people know me, I don’t think I would be able to express myself uninhibitedly.

However, I do have another hobby that I keep an absolute secret from everybody but close friends and family - gaming.

The reason is simple. Gaming is viewed as an infantile hobby by most people. Given my real-life job and responsibilities, there is definitely a huge chasm. If people were to find out, they might not take me seriously in the future.

I brought a loaned Gameboy DS with me to China last week and was playing Zelda: The Minish Cap at night before going to bed to relax. On the day I was supposed to return, I had reached a crucial exciting part of the game. But I wasn’t able to play it on the road because one of my VP’s decided to return to Singapore with me on the same flight. For the 2 hour journey and then the 3.5 hour flight back to Singapore, I was in agony because the gameboy was so close but so far away. I simply could not bring it out in his presence for fear of damning my career prospects.

What’s your opinion?

Eh gaming is real cool nowadays. I hear putting the fact that u are a uber guild leader in WoW down in your resume is a real plus point.

Go figure.

Organising a raid is not easy. If you’re a successful guild leader, it means you have good management and leadership skills.

On another note, Cowboy, I think you worry too much about what other ppl think. Why you care so much?

How you define which friend to share your blog which groups of friend not!?

For the 2 hours journey and then the 3.5 hours flight back to S’pore, are you sitting together? If yes, for manner you shouldn’t play the game.

Gaming is NOT infantile hobby. I bet your VP plays too … well for relax what.

probably the VP was agonizing over his PSP in his bag too.

I’d say go ahead and play. It’s not as if you are going to whip out the PSP and rub it against your crotch…

Gaming teaches us some things though we don’t know it consciously. I certainly learnt a lot as a guild leader in WoW way before I quit the game.

Showing that you have a hobby, albeit it being gaming, might actually work in your favor.

if the vp was into gaming, it’s good. if not, you’re in trouble, coz gaming is still perceived by many as ‘childish’. so it was a smart move that you didn’t, the gamble wouldn’t be worth it.

anon2 agrees with anon. unless one finds out the vp’s preferences, don’t take out the ds. childish or not, the image of prioritising the game over him might actually offend.

I don’t think folk from the previous generation (earlier than mine) perceive gaming to be anything other than a childish pursuit - the domain of kidults.

well… there’s a saying which goes work hard, play hard.

i dun think there’s anything wrong with playing gameboy, so unless u wanna impress the vp by reading doc or newspaper. jus go ahead and play ur gameboy.

oh! my bf complete the zelda minish cap le.. haha!

Personally, if someone were to judge me based on my hobbies (and they do), I’d take out the object of said hobby and show them exactly what judging is.

Seriously, if your career is diminished by the opinions of a person based on what you do for fun, I think it’s time to ask yourself whether you will be happy working for this person.

load in your pokemo to your ds, your vp will take his out and you two can start trading pokemon over infra red. Bound to get into his good books.

Agreed with koolgeek! VP also agonizes over something. I’ve played Minish cap a few weeks ago, agonizing over when my son goes to bed so I can get to the freaking gameboy!!!! (I don’t have my own)

I think you might have a point there. While gaming might seem like a fun thing to do to pass time, others might view it, like you said, infantile. If you think that there might be a strain if people found out, that may cause them to lose respect in you, by all means take the necessary steps to avoid these risks. Nothing can be more destructive in a workplace to have your subordinates’ disrespecting their superiors.

I usually whip out my psp when im in the lrt of when im at the printers…:)
