  • Straits Times: Cowboy Caleb On Nuffnang Advertising

The Straits Times recently asked for an interview on my views on Nuffnang.com.sg because I had signed-up and been tooting the horn about them non-stop. They had asked for a meet-up but I was travelling so it had to be done via email.

This time I was much more polite (compared to my previous outing).

Here are the questions that Jamie Ee fielded and my responses.

When did you signup with Nuffnang?
Officially, I came on-board on 19 May. You can read about the announcement here.

Why did you decide to signup with Nuffnang?
A few other Asian adproviders have approached me in the past, but the blogosphere is a small community and word gets out. Nuffnang was not only growing at an alarming rate – they were also displaying integrity and keeping their word on growing a community not profits.

The founders, Ming and Timothy asked me out for coffee and pitched their idea of Asian blogger centric ad provider. After I put all the facts together, I concluded that Nuffnang’s value proposition was clearly superior to anything outside of Asia (eg Google Adsense etc).

    How has Nuffnang benefitted you?
A Nike campaign ran on my blog for about 2 weeks. The payout was based on the number of unique visitors. Nuffnang has a web dashboard. At the end of the 2 weeks, the total payout was definitely far superior to any other web advertising program I’ve tried thus far. And the total number of impressions did not depend on a geographic location since the advertiser is in Singapore and so am I. That boosted the unique visitors greatly.

In addition, I also like the fact that I’m able to submit and share opinions with Nuffnang and get direct responses. They do give me this warm fuzzy feeling that they’re not out to milk me dry.

Can you reveal how much you earned from the Nike campaign. I understand from Nuffnang that you are Nuffnang’s top earner so far and that you’ve earned $200 in 2 weeks.
I decline to reveal how much exactly I’ve earned. Their estimated figure is about right.

You mentioned that you’ve signed up with other ad programmes before, can you name them and also tell me how much you earned from them?

    * Google Adsense – around USD5 per week. Stopped after a month due to low income.
    * Textads – Zero earnings. They didnt even assign me any ads.
    * Feedburner ads – around USD4 per month. I signed up a 2 months ago and am still trying them out.

Online ads are geographic sensitive. There is no point in showing somebody in Singapore an ad for a sale in the USA right? So if you sign up with Google Adsense, most of the time the ads appearing will be public service annoucements which pay $0. With Nuffnang, their advertisers are local and the bloggers are local. So ads appearing will be relevant in the geographic context. Therefore ads appear all the time instead of just some of the time.

Also, can you also tell me when you started seeking out ads for your blog? and why?
I run www.Liquidblade.com, which is an online community that provides free hosting for local blogs and non-profit organizations. Running ads on my blog help to pay the maintenance fees.

Briefly describe your blog and your readers
Cowboy Caleb’s Gonzo Journal is a popular local blog veering towards the liberal arts, sponsored & non-sponsored reviews of movies/products/restaurants, sponsored travel articles, and my personal views. It is enjoyed by mainly students and yuppies in their early twenties to mid-forties.

and also tell me when and why you started your blog?

I have been blogging since 2002. You can find more info here.
