  • Restaurant Review: Sun with Moon

Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Café
    501 Orchard Road
    #03-15/16/17 Wheelock Place Singapore 238880
    (65) 6733 6636

Sun with Moon cafe was the restaurant that Barffie had chosen for a treat that I owed. I had been informed earlier that it was a Japanese fine dining restaurant and cafe. What with all the neo-modern Nipponese deco, it sure looked like a nice place.

    Ok, here we go:

    Ambience
Rotten. Although the place looks nice in a fake japanese movie set sort of way, the restaurant is horrendously noisy. This joint resembles a fishmarket rather than a Japanese restaurant.

    Service
Rotten. The main courses arrived before the appetizers. And then we had to remind the waitress twice to check where our last 2 remaining dishes were. Lastly, we had to actually help the waitress to clear the table so that she could place the food on the table (as opposed to another waitress helping her).

    Food & Prices

    1. Avocado Salmon ($8.50) – nice but nothing special
    2. Kobe Beef & Cheese ($18.50) – average, a little too salty
    3. Ebi & Hotate Yaki ($15.80) – average
    4. Kani Tomago Toji ($14.80) – overpriced and unremarkable
    5. Australian Beef Steak ($21.80) – let’s never have australian beef again
    6. Rice Set ($9.00) – overpriced rice. A little overcooked.
    7. Sake Chazuke ($8.80) – unfortunately by the time it arrived, I had already reminded the waitress twice about it and was too pissed to eat.

    8. Cha Soba ($7.80) – We’ve had better
    9. Chocolate Parfait ($9.80) – I have no idea why everybody raves about this. It’s ice-cream. Nothing special about it.
    10. Kyodango & Warabi Mochi ($7.80) – Pretty but really not that easy on the taste-buds

Total bill with GST: $142.90 – value for money?

    I don’t think so

With rave reviews by mrbrown, sparklette and HungryGoWhere – my final verdict is really quite surprising.

I think perhaps with all my travelling perhaps my expectations about ambience, service and food have been elavated.

So excuse me if I say that perhaps this joint is an overpriced coffee shop masquerading as a Japanese restaurant serving sub-standard food?

    rating – 1 out of 5 stars.

Well, (to quote you), “perhaps with all my travelling” to places like the States and Hong Kong, my expectation of food standards has elevated too. Yet, I still find that the food quality at Sun with Moon is top notch (at least, at the time when I was there). I can’t speak accurately for the service standards since they all tend to suck in Singapore. But food is the one thing that we can be proud of.

You did cite 3 positive reviews about them. Pit those against this solo negative review and do the math.

To be fair to them, they probably just had an off-day, the way everyone does.

i thought it more like japanese fast food. a not very good version. went 3 times. bad experiences. like you, i cannot tahan the noise. not going again. some more i super picky about japanese food. so no no no. higher prices, better looking decor than its neighbor, but not great value or quality.

I’m a sucker for Japanese food and I do agree that Sun with Moon can be better. Anyone has more Japanese restaurants to recommend where they serve good food with affordable prices?
