Leadership: The Good Shepherd

To be a good leader means that one has to be a good shepherd, which is an extremely difficult thing. In fact it may be the most difficult demands of leadership.
- It’s always so much easier to sacrifice your people (most of them are replaceble anyway) or to let your people suffer for short-term gains. A good leader will sacrifice himself than to allow this to happen.
- Remember, a good shepherd loves his lost sheep as well as his normal run-of-the-mill sheep. Do not sacrifice a few black sheep - your team will not forget/forgive you.
- It’s hard to be a good shepherd when your people do not really know that you are secretly doing it in the background, watching out for them. People never say thank you, get over it. Be prepared to have your heart broken by ungrateful people.
- When people realize that you are looking out for them, admiration blossoms and unwavering loyalty develops. They will willingly follow you into the maws of death and destruction, secure in the knowledge that you will protect them.
- If people realize that you are not a good shepherd, consider your flock scattered when a wolf appears. A good leader has a team that sticks together even more tightly when trouble hits them.
