In case you didn’t know, today is Malaysia’s Independence Day. In 1957, the warlords overthrew their colonial overlords and in 2006, Malaysia is still a third-world nation. Yes, I am being sarcastic.

So what does the cry Merdeka(!), which will be chanted by many a foolish, intellectually-challenged simpleton all over Malaysia today, mean?

Merdeka means freedom in the Malay language. However what Merdeka means to many Malaysians is totally different.

    Merdeka means….

    1. The freedom for the ex-prime minister to challenge the policies of the current prime minister (his appointed successor) to the point where it becomes embarrassing to even mention that you’re from Malaysia.
    2. The freedom to mint money by selling ‘national cars’ with little or no safety features like a basic airbag.
    3. The freedom to deny students a chance at higher education at public institutions built with tax-payer’s money simply because they are not Malay.
    4. The freedom to deny changing the religion on the identity card of a muslim convert.
    5. The freedom to buy/sell titles like ‘Datuk’ (honorable mandarin)
    6. The freedom to build all kinds of structures/buildings without planning how to maintain them for the next 10 years.
    7. The freedom to plan cities with a population of 20 million, with a police force of 1015 staff.

And so yes, on this day I too am a Merdeka blogger…. except I have no kind words to say. If any of you disagree with me, I suggest you open up your mind and start travelling more.

Its actually to celebrate independence of Federation of Malaya. Overall celebration is in Sept when Sabah and Sarawak join the Federation. But then who cares? Those two states are just on the other side of the straits and they are just the one supporting the majority in the west.
