It’s Been A Long Time

A friend contacted me out of the blue yesterday via email. Seems he somehow managed to track me down through google. The last time I saw the dude, we were both 12 years old. Now we’re both 28 years old. In between wars have been fought, economies rose and fell and the intarwebs got popular.

So now he gives me his mobile number and says he wants to catch up.

Why would you want to catch up? Could we possibly have anything in common, apart from having attended the same primary school? I’m apprehensive about this. Maybe he’s depressed, and wants to see somebody from happier times in his life. Or perhaps he’s just lonely because seeking out childhood friends is what lonely people do.

My asshat behavior can be explained very simply. I do not really need that many friends. 5 close friends and 20 good friends is about all I can handle at any given time. Birthdays, outings, parties etc all require emotional maintenance and time. And anybody who knows me, can tell you that I’m a f87king alpha male that dominates a person’s time and space.

So should I catch up? I think I’ll just send an sms saying I’m not in the country at the moment (which is true!).

I get apprehensive too whenever long-lost friends suddenly remember me after donkey years and want to catch up. Many times happened that either they wanted to sell me something or they wanted my money for their wedding dinners and whatever occasions that were important to them but absolutely had nothing to do with me. Maybe that’s what friends are for?

i totally agree with you. i know there is no harm in meeting up with ex-classmates. but like you say time is precious commodity. i don’t want to go some gathering and end up feeling like i wasted my time.
i cannot explain it but i think at the age of 26 i know what i want and what i enjoy… i have friends that i feel comfortable with and going out with them is always confirmed “a good time”. with these “unknowns from the past”, it’s a big question mark. let them stay as my ex-classmates… am i curious about them? ermm… not really… am i anti-social? hehe.. maybe in some ways..

friends are good for one thing: crackers.

u spread them thinly on a cheese cracker, it’s a done deal. good with dips too.my fave has to be guacamole.
