PitStop Cafe

Located on the third storey of a shophouse in the unlikely locality of Circular Road (with scores of pubs and ktv’s downstairs), you will find the Pitstop Cafe. It still looks spanking new, with brightly lit walls painted with orange, green, blue and red stripes.

The coffee was good. Mine came with one of those foamy patterns that take time and effort to create, so I knew substantial care had been invested into brewing my drugs. Thumbs up. I also had a chance to try the food - which was excellent and reasonably priced. My meal was cooked just right and wasn’t some rush job or amateurish.

Pitstop positions itself as a cafe where people can get together and play games. They have a huge collection of board, table-top and card games. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many games in one place before.

You have to pay to play (it goes by the hour), but you can get a package which includes food for the entire group plus playtime. I did think the fees to play were rather expensive, but this was easily offset by the fact that

  1. They have a wide selection of games, ranging from logic to strategy
  2. The staff really take their time to teach you the basics of the game to get you started
  3. When you get the hang of it, they stand behind you to cheer you on
  4. Their service is excellent, they kept refilling our glasses with water while we played

I (initially) thought that board games were rather gay (and geeky), but to my surprise I started having fun. Originally I had planned to spend only an hour there for dinner, but I ended up playing games until closing time.

This cafe is a refreshing change if you’re an office drone that’s sick of pub milling after work. Why not try an evening of table top fun with a group of friends while you sip some coffee and munch on fingerfood?

Pitstop Cafe also has a blog that is updated regularly. Schwingg!

I love board games! I go to Settlers once in a while, and I used to hang out at Oasis very often until they closed down recently. (They’re rebuilding with a different concept at a new location.) Haven’t tried Pitstop, though. Probably should try it sometime.
