Movie Review: King Kong
I did not want to watch King Kong.
Believe me when I say this - the tickets were more expensive and it was a 3 hour long movie. I do not like aminals and King Kong is just another oversized monkey to me. But my 2.5 year old nephew and 5 year old niece begged and begged and begged and begged. “Wo men yao karn Kink Konk!!!” they screamed in unison.
God bless the children and Peter Jackson.
King Kong is one of the best action movies I’ve seen, easily.
The story is simple. Unscrupulous film director hoodwinks crew and cast to mysterious island where they encounter a giant ape. After rescuing damsel in distress from aforementioned ape, they subdue and drag it’s hairy ass back to New York city where it escapes and wrecks havoc.
It’s actually a story of a man who lies to get what he wants, a man whose love goes unappreciated, a sad woman that discovers that she’s not the only one who is lonely and an ape who hides sensitivity and nobility under the facade of a brute.
The casting is immaculate. Jack Black was perfect as the I’m-doing-this-because-of-circumstances director, Carl Denham who is both evil and a victim at the same time. The heroine Ann Darrow is played by Naomi Watts, who excels in roles where she is an actress acting as an actress as seen in the astonishing Mulholland Drive. But the star of the show is King Kong, who emotes anger, despair, pain and kindness.
Battle scenes between King Kong and other huge beasts are nothing short of astonishingly exciting. Peter Jackson has put his experience from making LOTR to good use.
rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
