  • Servants No More

The flat used to be a whorehouse.

The maid was a prostitute. And Madam The Min Yek was her pimp.

It is with great disgust that I read such articles like this where people simply treat their maids like playthings.

Perhaps the problems is the language we use. If we didn’t refer to the people who come from foreign lands to toil in our homes as servants or maids, perhaps we’d treat them better.

The word maid or servant seem to subconsciously indicate that they are supposed to do your bidding no matter how inhuman or ridiculous the request may be. It simply cheapens the fact that they are fellow human beings.

I think the word ‘helper’ is far more appropriate. After all, they are here to help, not serve us like lords and ladies.

And the media doesn’t really help much, because I’ve noticed they sometimes don’t bother to get the point-of-view of these people themselves, relegating them to ’subjects’ that don’t have a voice.

come on, she didn’t force her maid to do that right? or did i miss any part of the story?

still, it’s illegal & unethical action on her part.

If she wasn’t forced into it, the maid agency shouldn’t have known about it if all the maid wanted is to make more money?

For me, I cannot condone prostitution of any form in my house. “Dirties” the place I feel.
