  • A Modest Proposal

    Chris Lombardi

Verily, I think blogspot is great for newbies, your grandmother and people paralysed on one side of the body. But once you begin blogging and get the hang of it, you can’t help but notice that blogger lacks many features. Even simple things like an expandable post needs a blogger hack which is a pain in the rear to install.

My blog, and every single blog we host on Liquidblade.com is powered by the most excellent Wordpress system. It’s so powerderful and simple to use, that I strongly recommend it to you. Piano teachers usually stop their students from buying lousy cheap pianos because playing a bad piano is the fastest way to kill your enthusiasm to improve your skills. I think the same concept applies to your choice of blogging weapons.

The fastest way to test-drive Wordpress and decide if you like it would be to download Flock, whichI reviewed a couple of days ago and go to this Flock-only-accesible page to claim a free wordpress account.

Alternatively, I have another proposal – How would you like your blog to be hosted on Liquidblade.com?

I’m considering charging a (very small) monthly fee for bloggers who want to use better tools, but don’t want to bother with the headache of technical details, hosting problems and other misc evils. A lot of people have been asking us for blogging accounts, and we really feel bad because we can’t give away anymore because

    1) The server can only host so many people on the current plan
    2) A better plan costs money
    3) Helping people kickstart their blogs takes a lot of time

So you will get a blog at [Your Nick].liquidblade.com, all your older blog entries from blogger/LJ/etc will be migrated over, dozens of excellent templates which you can customize to your heart’s content and best of all – technical support.

Let me know if you are interested, and how much you think it should cost.

Just tried Wordpress on Wordpress.com. I am impressed and quite interested to know more about the LiquidBlade Hosting.

Anyway, can we use our (found) templates instead of the premades available?

As for how much should it cost, that would depends on what it gives. Like webspace and such… Would be good if the price is below 10? I am not sure about the market price…

Yeah, I just tried wordpress.com today. Quite impressed. It’s looking better than Movable Type, though customisation is still a problem.

I pay about S$80 a year for the basic Typepad account, gives reasonable bandwidth and webspace for a blog-that-no-one-reads. Something more competitive than that would be good. Hehe.

Keep me informed if anything materialises yar?

Hello! Hmm… I have plenty of hosting actually (I have my own reseller accounts and multiple domains), so I would not need a hosting account. But I would love it if you can help me to convert my Blogger posts to WordPress! For a fee of course. What say you?

    Dickson > I’m thinking like 5 – 8 bucks/month.

kite > sure, I’ll keep you informed.

knight > no, we use wp.

raz > well we’re not really doing this for the money so cannot lah. There are a lot of resource for migration, have you looked around?

younG > blogsome doesnt allow you to install your own themes or plugins. We will. Plus we will migrate your old blog and provide you with monthly stats.

serendipity > The main benefit if that you get blogger-specific hosting and tech support. One of the most difficult parts of running your own server is the technical details. We’ll handle it for you so you can just focus on your blogging.

Caleb, if you’re charging around $8 a month, I’d like to know more about Liquidblade hosting too. I mean, having your blog hosted on liquidblade does scream “HIP!”… but the problem is the mode of payment. Using ATM’s Fund transfer or Mastercard or what?

Can email me back with more details once you’ve straightened out all the details for the plan? Thanks.
