the liberal arts, grown-up stuff & random mischief

26 Aug 2005Yesterday evening after work, I went to the new National Library at Bras Basah. It just so happened that I brought my knapsack to work instead of my briefcase because I had some sports activities during my lunchhour – so I decided to pop by the library and borrow a few books which could then be carried home inside my knapsack.
There seems to be a growing crowd at the library after office hours. People from all walks of life seem to have taken up reading. I think the library at Bras Basah is now officially the best place to meet members of the opposite sex that have the same interests as you (previously I recommended Borders at Orchard). I lost count of the number of attractive young women ranging from tertiary students to office ladies who were browsing the bookshelves. So if you like people who read (a sure gurantee of above average intelligence) then please proceed to the genre of books that catch your fancy most and try to chat up the people whom are browsing there. It’s almost certain that they will be single if they are not wearing a ring. Why, if I were not monogamous, I would certainly loved to have gotten to know that sweet young thing who was about to borrow an Umberto Eco novel.
It’s amzing that the library now makes comics freely available. I stumbled upon a copy of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and sat down to flip through it. Have I mentioned that there are dozens of comfy sofas scattered at strategic locations? You’ll never not be able to find a place to sit and read. As I got lost in the world of the Sandman, the hours just went by and before I realized it, the hour had gotten late and I had to rush home. But not before I signed up for a premium membership (can borrow 8 books!) at the self-service kiosk!
Sigh. I wonder if I can find a part-time job at the library or some bookstore.

Library cannot talk lar! People like you (and little kids with no manners, and teenagers with no discretion) are the reason why libraries are not the sacred place of silence that they should be.
And anyway, if you were to creep up to a lady and whispered to her, I think a little pervy rite?

yup. you can volunteer for quite a few things, depending on your interests. submit book reviews too. that’s volunteering also. if you want more details, you’re more than welcome to contact me via my blog or otherwise.

Well working and volunteering at the library are two totally different thingy with reading at the library. If you are working at a library, I don’t think you can read. I can see all the librarians sorting books, shelving and so on. They wont be reading. :) As for that BGR thingy, welll…wat the heck! I cld easily do tat wif a guy too. :)

all hail the higher purpose our National Library serves. last i checked and strolled through its corridors,it seemed to be the unofficial SDU venue.
many were doing more people-watching than looking down at the open books in their hands.

I went there during lunch hour.
And it is very rush as I work at Raffles Place. But browsing the new books just make me a very happy person.
