Movie Review: ‘Let’s Work At The UN aka ‘The Interpreter’

“Vengeance is a lazy form of grief” - Sylvie Broome
The last movie I watched pretty much convinced me that Africa was farked for good. But the Interpreter gives me hope that Africa could have a running chance if the United Nations would hurry up and do its job. Oh and this movie starring Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman makes me want to apply for a job at the UN because it’s oh so glam.
Sylvie (Kidman) works at the UN as an interpreter. While people speak, she translates for them on the fly. Oh yes, she’s truly good at voices and languages. One night when she returns to the soundroom to get her belongings, she overhears a conversation about a plot to assasinate a visiting dictator the following week. Problem is, Secret Service agent Tobin (Penn) doesnt believe her 100% and suspects she may have her own agenda as Sylvie is from the same country as the dictator.
A slow-paced movie that is so well written, The Interpreter is a rare gem in the current influx of art-deco/comedic/horror crap that is flooding our cinemas. The protagonists have no time for love, sex, coffee and romance. As the storyline progresses, you get a quick lesson in Real Politik 101. The entire movie was filmed in the actual UN building, so everything you see is authentic. Throw in the marvelous skyline of Manhattan and you have a recipe for a need to move to NYC and be part of the bigger picture.
4 out of 5 wangs.
Note: After the movie, one of my colleagues told me that I’m like agent Tobin because I’m a moody, self-contained unit of self-loathing and despair. Na beh!
