Valentines Day 2005

Roses, diamonds and fireworks - love is in the air.
It’s that time of the year again. For some it’s an amazing period. But for most it’s a bittersweet experience. Having been on both sides of Valentines day, I can fully appreciate the irony of the it being the day of Lurrve for some and the day of you-are-a-loser for most.
I spent most of last Friday looking for a ring. Actually I had already bought her a diamond ring 6 years ago but I decided that it didnt count so I went hunting at Bugis Junction with their row of Diamond Jewelers. In my ignorance, I actually wanted to get engagement rings like the ones that Jean had bought, but the salesgirl quickly corrected this by pointing out that engagement ring buying is a team activity and not the effort of a solo clueless male. So I got a ring in the shape of a flower, consisting of one large diamond and 5 smaller ones surrounding it.
Incidently, I bought the first ring at GoldHeart and this time I bought another ring from the same place. I didnt want to get a Solitaire diamond because the last time we visited a diamond shop, she specifically asked me not to blow a wad of dough on a huge diamond engagement ring because I had already given her one. Instead she asked me save the money for wedding expenses. So I’m thinking nevermind, I’ll get her some big fat ones when I make it big in the future like MrBrown.
On Saturday, I drove out early and ordered a bouquet of red roses with a boy & girl bear. They cost a bomb. Maybe I should be a flower farmer instead.
On Sunday morning, I picked up the roses and drove over to her place to surprise her with it. Then we took pictures of her holding it before going out for a most excellent breakfast. In the evening, we watched Constantine at the cinema and then went to a Japanese restaurant for dinner. After that she felt too full and didnt want to adjourn for coffee and cake which ruined all my romantic plans. So I drove her to the seaside and presented her with the ring there.
So that was my Valentine’s Day, celebrated one day in advance in Malaysia.
Now I am back in Singapore. Today will be a very depressing day as I see couples walking around hand-in-hand with flowers and chocolates and pass by eateries packed with love-sick monkeys.
So what will you be doing today?
