Movie Review: Last Life In The Universe

I'm only sleeping

Some movies are so etheral in quality, they defy description. Last Life In The Universe is a Thai-Japanese movie with cinematography work done by the acclaimed Christopher Doyle. Kenji is a japanese obsessive-compulsive freak with a penchant for cleanliness and books, who works in a Japanese-Thai library. He has a shady yakuza past which is revealed bit-by-bit.

Hanging
Kenji rehearses his own suicide with various scenarios such hanging and wrist slitting but never actually plucks up the courage to pull it off.

Jumping off the bridge
One night, he squats on the edge of a bridge to jump into the water and distracts a prostitute standing in the middle of the road who is promptly killed by a car. This snaps him out of his melancholy and he attaches himself to the prostitute’s sister named Noi in hope of making amends. The both of them grow closer and learn that life isn’t as bad after all.

drive over me
This movie is embued with a dreamlike quality. The sequence of the tale is toned down and emphasis is on the atmosphere and emotions of the protagonist. Many scenes go past without words or actions being required. Just by watching, we understand what Kenji and Noi are experiencing. There is something hypnotic about the slow rhythm in which the pain and longing of each protagonist blooms.

Highly recommended - download it here.
