‘Deep Purple’ In Concert
A long time ago, an 11-year-old boy was given a cassette entitled ‘Motorhead’ by a 70’s band called Deep Purple by his father. He was allowed to play it at full volume whilst his father drove him to school every morning. So his father and him sang along to ‘Smoke on the Water’ and ‘Highway Star’ during the 20 minute journey everyday. This lead to other things, such as an appreciation of the school of hard rock and blues.
While his classmates were getting warmed up to ‘The New Kids On The Block’, and Debbie Gibson, he was already jumping up and down to the riffs of Queen, The Black Crowes and Metallica.
But to this very day, he never forgot how it all began with Deep Purple…
Today is the day my Dad and I went to a Deep Purple concert. I looked into my wardrobe and realized I had a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear to a rock concert. My mom had thrown away all my old Skid Row and Metallica t-shirts.
At about 2pm we drove into Singapore. First stop was at Beauty World plaza to pickup my mom’s cosmetic products from her beautician. I cannot stand the bitch. She always refers to me as a ‘little boy’ despite that fact that I am a strapping 26 yrs old this year.
After that, we headed to the Turkish restaurant at Sultan Road where we had some Turkish food(duh). We also smoked the Sisha (water-pipe). Dad now thinks he may want to open a Sisha restaurant in malaysia so people can smoke while watching football.
At about 6pm, we drove to Fort Canning Park. A crowd had already begun to form. Since the concert only began at 8pm, the gates would only be open at 6.30pm.
Once we got in, we quickly got a spot as close to the stage as possible – which was very close.
An band from Malaysia called ‘Single Track Mind’ opened the show. I thought they were pretty good, but got booed off the stage by the audience who chanted ‘We want Deep Purple’ and ‘Bai Bai!!!’.
Then this dude called Riki Hendrix came on stage to perform. He was supposed to be the cousin of Jimi Hendrix or something. Anyway he played some pretty decent guitar.
Then finally Deep Purple came on and blew everybody’s mind away. Yes, they can still rock despite the fact that they are as old as my dad.
Disaster struck towards the end of the playing of ‘Highway star’ when a transformer blew. The show came to a standstill. People jeered and screamed stuff at the roadies like
“Do your fuckin job and stop smoking you fat lazy bastard, yeah you!”
“Have some urgency”
“55 dollars and this happens? We want our money back!”
“We want free beer!”
The manager had to actually come out and beg everybody to be understanding and co-operate because ‘We all love Deep Purple’. At that point the crowd relented.
When the show finally resumed, Deep Purple brought the house down with ‘Spacetruckin’ and finished off with ‘Smoke On The Water’ which had everybody singing along with it.
Because the audience cheered and screamed for more, Deep Purple came back for an encore with their hit single (in the 80s) called ‘Fireball’.
All in all, a very enjoyable concert under the stars despite the technical problems and heat. I’ll be posting the photos taken during the concert later.
So anyway, the only original CD I will be buying this year will be Deep Purple’s new album ‘Bananas’. Yes, I will NOT be downloading it.
