Mexican Food & Teenage Angst
Last night was a very good night for two reasons.
Firstly, we had a fantastic dinner at Margherita’s, a mexican restaurant in Faber Ave, smack in the middle of a housing estate. SD is really good at looking for award-winning eateries in strange locations. The deco was gaudy yet charming and rustic.
The boss recommended that we just order 2 appetizers and 2 main courses as their servings were rather large. He then proceeded to recommend some dishes to us because we confessed to being complete ignoramuses at Mexican cuisine. So the first dish was some cheese thingy roll which was excellent. Then we got this round balls which turned out to be mushrooms friend in delicious batter. Next came the leg of lamb which we were supposed to wrap with tortilla’s. Lastly we had the very excellent beef with tortilla. Desert was some donuts with ice-cream dish and a cake lightly spead with caramel. Oh yeah, for drinks we had Margerita’s of course.
The food was excellent. I would recommend it to anybody looking for an delicious dinner to share with close friends in a cosy environment.
After dinner, we went out and walked around. The shops around the area seemed to be stuck in the 1980s. No shit - you have to see it to believe it.
The second reason why it was a good night was because as we were driving through Faber Ave, I had a feeling of deja vu. The it struck me that I had been here before.
In 1992, I was 14 years old. Another friend and I came to Singapore to spend an entire week at a friend’s place at… Faber Ave. He was the son of a nightclub owner and his mother was a concubine. It was a very memorable weekend because I got my ears pierced knowing that I would have a week to let it heal before I went home. I got a little sick because my ear lobe got infected later. We spent the whole week swimming, playing video games, commiting random acts of mayhem and wandering around.
It’s strange because I had forgotten about this, and now the memory is back.
