Negative Humour
I have a friend whom I’m starting to detest. She’s a very normal Chinese singaporean in her earlier 30s, married, no children with nice car/house and husband in tow. She has this really bad habit of using negative humour on people to make others laugh.
For an example, if a person is fat, she’ll crack fat jokes about that person right in front of that person. If the person has bad skin or is vertically challenged - ditto. Usually the person who is the butt of the jokes will laugh along just to keep the mood. I don’t think this is good. In fact, I’ve alway been against negative humour, having had it etched into my brain during a catholic youth camp. I think tearing people down to make yourself feel good is about as low as you can, if you do it in front of them.
Amazingly, this woman is also a youth counselor. She counsels troubled youth. I cannot even begin to imagine the damage this woman is wrecking on young teenagers. This kind of mental abuse will not peter out with age.
